Every year, the draw for the World Championship group always produces interesting, spicy, and even deadly results. In the past year, we’ve seen how “chaotic” Group B is known as “Group Hell” and has produced crazy matches and unexpected results.
Seeing the “chaos” that occurred last year, the public is looking forward to a similar result at this year’s World Championship. The public wants to return to see the surprising results of the match, unexpected expectations, and the “chaos” that is more excited than last year. These three things will become hype in themselves when the World Championship begins.
Then, how does the hype arise? Of course, through the group draw. Every year, the group draw event is always anticipated. This group draw is not only intended to divide the group, but also can provide an idea of what the match will look like during the group stage.
Just like the previous two years, there will be 24 participating teams that will participate in this year’s World Championship. 12 teams from Major Region will be placed in the Main Event while 3 Major Region teams who occupy the third seed, VCS second seed team, and other Minor Region teams will start from the Play-In round.
The drawing system will start from the first play-in round draw and then proceed to the main event draw. YamatoCannon and Jiizuke will participate as group drawers.
The Play-In Round will be divided into three pools. The first pool contains Major Region’s third seed teams such as Clutch Gaming, Splyce, Hong Kong Attitude, and Damwon Gaming. The second pool will be filled by Unicorns of Love, Isurus Gaming, Royal Youth, and Lowkey Esports. Meanwhile, the third pool will be filled by Flamengo Esports, DetonatioN FocusMe, MEGA, and MAMMOTH.
The first pool will be drawn first, then followed by the second and third pools. The 12 Play-In teams will be divided into four groups and each group will be filled by three teams. The following are the results of the Play-In round group draw.
- Clutch Gaming (North America)
- Unicorns of Love (CIS)
- MAMMOTH (Oceania)
- Splyce (Europe)
- Isurus Gaming (Latin America)
- DetonatioN FocusMe (Japan)
- Hong Kong Attitude (Hong Kong)
- Lowkey Esports (Vietnam)
- MEGA (Southeast Asia)
- Damwon Gaming (South Korea)
- Royal Youth (Turkey)
- Flamengo Esports (Brazil)
In the group stage, each team participating in the Play-In will compete in the Double Round Robin format and each match is the Best of One. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Knockout round and will compete for the last four slots in the Main Event. Knockout round matchup will be determined by drawing where the top team of the group will choose the second position team in the group.
After the Play-In round is over, the draw continues for the Main Event group. Like the Play-In round, the Main Event group draw will also be divided into two pools and the drawing process will start from the first pool. The first pool will be filled by first seed teams such as G2 Esports, FunPlus Phoenix, SK Telecom T1, and Team Liquid. The second pool will be filled by the second seed team, the third seed from LPL, namely Invictus Gaming, and the first seed from VCS, namely GAM Esports.
However, there are several rules for the Main Event draw. One group can only contain one team from each region. If there is a group that has two teams from the same region, the team that was just drawn will be moved to another group. If the draw process gets stuck, a rollback will be carried out until the right scenario is found. The following are the results of the main event group draw.
- G2 Esports (Europe)
- Griffin (South Korea)
- Cloud9 (North America)
- FunPlus Phoenix (China)
- J-Team (Taiwan)
- GAM Esports (Vietnam)
- SK Telecom T1 (South Korea)
- Fnatic (Europe)
- Royal Never Give Up (China)
- Team Liquid (North America)
- AHQ Esports Club (Taiwan)
- Invictus Gaming (China)
- TBD = The team that has successfully passed the Play-In round
Just like the Play-In group stage, the Main Event will also use the Double Round Robin format and each match is a Best of One. The top two teams from each group have the right to qualify for the Playoffs and have the opportunity to win the World Championship.
This group draw produced interesting results. Group of Death or Group of Hell is immediately pinned in Group C which is filled by teams that are indeed strong and include the seeded champions. Not only that, Group C also has the potential to be filled by Clutch Gaming if they manage to escape the Play-In round, making this group even more terrifying.
In addition, Group A is also seen as equally terrible because of the two dominant teams, namely G2 Esports and Griffin. Group D is likely to present tough competition between Team Liquid and Invictus Gaming. Meanwhile Group B is seen as a Group that will be dominated by only one team, namely FunPlus Phoenix.
The Play-In round will start on 2-7 October 2019 while the Main Event will start on 12 October – 2 November 2019. If you want more information about the World Championship, you can visit this link.
