Twitch Beat CNN and MSNBC Audience Total in January 2018

Benjamin Schachter, a analyst from Macquarie (a banking and financial advisory firm) disclosed his findings regarding the number of viewers on Twitch which has already surpassed the number of viewers of popular TV stations, CNN and MSNBC.

Street Insider reported the findings of Benjamin who said that Twitch (which is an Amazon subsidiary) managed to attract an average number of 962 thousand viewers, concurrent (aka at the same time), in January 2018. This figure is up 22% from the January 2017 results and 26% greater than December 2017.

In comparison, according to the report, this average viewership competes arguably with the most popular cable TV channels in the United States.

In 2017, the number of viewers on Fox News Channel and ESPN reached 1.5 million per day. Meanwhile, MSNBC reached 885 thousand and CNN got 783 thousand viewers per day.

Previously, the ELEAGUE Boston Major match on Twitch also broke the attendance record at the same time with 1.1 million viewers.

Unfortunately, one thing that could be problematic is trend consistency. According to Benjamin, less than 50% of the games that occupied the top 10 viewers in 2017 were also ranked in the top 10 in 2018. That is, less than half of the best-selling games were still able to maintain their popularity from last year.

For example, PUBG and Fortnite, which were not very popular before, suddenly caught the eye. In addition, the number of viewers watching at the same time was not always consistent.

There are shows that are much more popular than others and generate a spike in audience numbers, such as the ELEAGUE Boston Major or when Tyler1 stream back to playing League of Legends after being banned for 613 days.

However, this increase in the number of viewers is also reasonable because TV stations often experience the same thing because there are shows that are more popular than other shows. Return-tyler1-ke-league-of-legends-dan-s Success-mementuk-rekor-viewer-twitch/

This is of course good news for the esports industry because it is starting to compete with cable TV for the public mainstream. However, this figure is a figure for the global market whose industrial value in 2018 has reached a number US $ 922 million, according to Newzoo.
