Researchers from the University of York in the UK found a correlation between the ability of young people to play the two most popular games and their level of intelligence.
This research was conducted by the Digital Creativity Lab in York. They found that a number of games action strategy can function like some kind of IQ test. For the full findings of their research, my friends can read it in this report.
The initial purpose of this research is not really to answer whether playing games can increase one’s intelligence or vice versa. But they just wanted to find a correlation between the ability to play for a number of different games.
The researchers focused on 2 genre games, namely MOBA and FPS. The reason is, 2 genre it is the most popular genre played by hundreds of millions of people around the world.
The research team consisting of people from the Department of Psychology and Computer Science at York University actually conducted 2 studies.
The first study examined a pool of players who were experienced at League of Legends. From this first study, they found that the ability to play League of Legends directly proportional to the results of a standard intelligence test.
As for the second study, they examined a number of data from 4 games: 2 MOBA games (League of Legends and Dota 2), and 2 FPS games (Destiny and Battlefield 3).
From the second study, their findings were that the performance of playing MOBA with IQ levels increased with age. Unfortunately, they cannot find this in FPS games because the performance decreases when players leave their teens.
The researchers also said that there is a correlation between the ability to play games action strategy as LoL and Dota 2 this is similar to the correlation seen in traditional games like chess.
Professor Alex Wade of the Department of Psychology and Digital Creativity Labs at the University of York said, “games of that kind League of Legends and Dota 2 is a complex game, which emphasizes social interaction and intelligence. Our research shows that the ability to play in this game can be measured by the level of intelligence. “
Meanwhile, Athanasios Kokkinakis, a PhD student who led the study, said, “Unlike the First Person Shooter (FPS) game which emphasizes speed and accuracy, MOBA focuses more on memory and the ability to make strategic decisions. Maybe that’s why we found a correlation between intelligence and MOBA playing ability. “
